Real Estate vs Gold vs Stocks vs Savings: Where Should Pakistanis Invest?
Pakistani savers have four familiar places to put money: bank savings, gold, the stock market and property. None is "best". Each does a different job. Here is a plain comparison, and where fractional property fits.
The four options compared
| Savings / certificates | Gold | Stocks (PSX) | Property | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Income | Fixed profit | None | Dividends, uncertain | Rent, if let |
| Growth | None | Price changes | Can be large, can fall | Slow, uneven |
| Easy to sell | Very | Very | Very | Slow |
| Entry cost | Low | Low | Low | High, or low if fractional |
| Main risk | Inflation eroding value | Price swings, storage | Market falls | Vacancy, illiquidity |
Savings and certificates
Safe and simple, but the real return depends on inflation. If inflation is higher than the profit rate, your money buys less each year.
Gold
Often used as a store of value. It pays no income, and prices move with the global market and the rupee. Good as protection, less useful as an income source.
Stocks
Shares can grow and pay dividends, and they are easy to trade, which also makes them easy to panic-sell. Prices can swing widely.
Property
Property can earn rent and may rise in value over long periods. The costs are size (it is expensive), time (it is slow to sell) and effort (tenants, repairs, paperwork). That is the problem fractional ownership tries to solve: a small ticket, no landlord work, a share of one specific property. It does not fix illiquidity; units may not be easy to sell before the planned exit.
A sensible way to combine them
- Keep an emergency fund in savings first, covering several months of expenses.
- Hold some gold if you want a hedge.
- Add shares if you can stomach swings.
- Put money you will not need for years into property, ideally spread over more than one asset.
One rule across all of them
Do not rely on a single number promised by anyone. Ask what happens if things go wrong, how you get your money out, and what it costs. See why invest in property and the risk disclosure. This article is general information, not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is real estate better than gold in Pakistan?
They do different jobs. Property can earn rent and may grow in value but is slow to sell; gold pays no income and is easy to sell. Many investors hold both.
How much should I keep in savings before investing in property?
Many advisers suggest an emergency fund covering several months of expenses first. This is general information, not financial advice.
Is property safer than the stock market?
Not automatically. Prices and rents can fall, and property is far harder to sell quickly.
